This text, which is the proceedings of the first international conference on the biologic effects of ultraviolet radiation, represents a remarkable compendium of recent knowledge and contains some 70 separate papers on a wide variety of subjects. It is of particular value for the dermatologist because it brings together many of the world authorities on photobiology as their particular knowledge or instrumentation relates to the skin.
Such general topics covered are erythema, the effects of the atmosphere on erythema production, photopathology as it relates to ultraviolet-induced diseases, the use of ultraviolet in therapy, protection from ultraviolet, the morphologic and histologic effects of ultraviolet on the skin, the effects of ultraviolet on cellular processes and subcellular organelles, and on various cellular constituents such as proteins and nucleic acids. There is also a section on the action spectra which are responsible for biologic responses as well as a section on the artificial
