To the Editor.—

The article by Shapiro et al published in the ARCHIVES (110:547, 1974) and entitled "Liver Disease in Psoriatics—An effect of Methotrexate Therapy?" recalled a study performed in 1952-1953 at the Massachusetts General Hospital by the late Leon Reznick, MD; W. Warren Point, MD (now at the MIT Health Service), and myself in which we noted hepatic dysfunction and liver enlargement in approximately six patients with widespread psoriasis. Some of these patients also had enlarged lymph nodes, and biopsy specimens of these nodes revealed "dermatopathic lymphadenitis." Since I had just come from Dr. Gerald Klatskin's teaching in New Haven I persuaded Dr. Point to perform biopsies of some of these livers, which revealed benign changes, as noted by Shapiro. We were struck by instances of fatty infiltration without fibrosis and wondered whether this was the result of protein depletion. I coined a term that never became popular, "dermatopathic . . .
