—Dr Reed's letter has to be answered because it contains several inaccuracies as follows:
- To the best of our knowledge, at the time we submitted our manuscript to the ARCHIVES, no one had described histologic changes in a recurrent melanocytic nevus that could be confused with those of malignant melanoma. However, while our paper was in press, another, entitled "Common and Uncommon Melanocytic Nevi and Borderline Melanomas," by Drs Richard J. Reed, Herbert Ichinose, Wallace H. Clark, Jr, and Martin C. Mihm Jr appeared in Seminars in Oncology (June, 1975). They wrote therein that "The growth centers at the dermoepidermal interface of a recurrent nevus may be misinterpreted as an evolving malignant melanoma." Priority, therefore, goes to these authors, whose views we share.
