To the Editor.—
In a report by Arbesman et al in the ARCHIVES (110:378-381, 1974), elevated levels of serum IgE were observed in patients with bullous pemphigoid but not in those with pemphigus. We have similarly pursued, as abstracted1 (and perhaps concurrently with the study by Arbesman and co-workers), the evaluation of levels of serum IgE in a population of patients with Brazilian pemphigus foliaceus (BPF) from the Servico do Pefigo Foliaceo (São Paulo, Brazil) and with pemphigus vulgaris (PV). In light of significant (P < .01) and inordinately elevated levels of IgE in BPF compared with those in PV, it was thought that brief communication of these observations and their possible significance to the ARCHIVES would be of interest in themselves as well as for their comparison with those of Arbesman et al.
