Carl Truman Nelson, MD, died on March 16, 1978, of a coronary occlusion. For 22 years he was professor and chairman of the Department of Dermatology, College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, and director of the Dermatology Service, Presbyterian Hospital. He would have been 70 years old in a few months and had been retired from his academic duties for almost five years, but had continued in private practice until the day of his untimely death.

Carl's career in medicine brought him international fame for his numerous contributions in dermatology, bacteriology, and immunology. A native of Providence, RI, he attended Harvard University, where he obtained his DMD in 1932, AB in 1935, MA in 1937, and his MD in 1941. He interned at the University of Minnesota Hospitals.
