Flat Facial Warts Treated With Fluorouracil

To the Editor.—

One of the most challenging and frustrating therapeutic problems is the management of multiple flat facial warts. Although these lesions are generally asymptomatic, they are cosmetically unacceptable to most patients. Spontaneous resolution often occurs in many patients, but others may harbor the warts for years. In children, the best management is often benign neglect, which may lead to a spontaneous cure. Many older patients are impatient and are willing to try more active treatment measures.

This communication describes four patients with a long history of multiple flat facial warts who were completely cured after a short course of topically applied fluorouracil. Another patient had only a partial regression of the warts. Topically applied fluorouracil was used because of its somewhat limited success in the treatment of condyloma acuminata.1
