The data presented by Drs Ablin and Holder confirm that BCL antibodies occur in patients with burns. Other investigators have shown that there is also a high incidence of intercellular and basement membrane zone antibodies in these patients. These observations suggest that the type of injury to skin caused by burns leads to the formation of antibodies to a wide variety of epidermal antigens. Whether the antibodies in turn play a role in prolonging or aggravating tissue injury is presently unknown.

The true incidence of BCL antibodies in patients with burns is presently unclear. A wide variation in incidences has been reported in the few studies that have been performed, as shown in Dr Ablin's table. This variation is to be expected from the different substrates and serum dilutions used in the assays.
