To the Editor.—
In the June ARCHIVES (115:678,1979), Nielsen reported a case of basal cell epithelioma arising in a BCG vaccination scar. He stated that he was unaware of any such cases reported previously. Recently, we observed a 31-year-old patient with basal cell nevus syndrome who showed basal cell epitheliomas following needle punctures.1 One basal cell epithelioma, measuring 5 cm, developed 18 years after a BCG vaccination on the upper part of the right arm. The other tumor, measuring 3 mm, appeared three years after an intravenous drip on the back of the left hand. Reviewing the literature, we found a description of basal cell carcinoma following BCG vaccination by Ben-Hur et al in 1963.2 These authors described two patients with basal cell epitheliomas that developed 1 and 12 years after BCG vaccination.
