To the Editor.—
In the July 1980 ARCHIVES (116:773-776), Coleman and associates describe acral lentiginous melanoma and report that 34 of 35 cases occurred on the sole of the foot. In 1977,1 33 cases of plantar melanoma were reported from the same institution, but no reference to the previous publication appears in the article of Coleman et al, undoubtedly an oversight. These tumors are uncommon, and, from the total number of reported cases, it is difficult to determine the number of different cases. It would be interesting to know how many of the 34 cases of plantar melanoma reported by Coleman et al were previously reported cases.
