In response to the inquiry by Dr Arrington concerning previously reported cases cited in our current article, I would like to clarify the matter. This concerns a series of articles on acral lentiginous melanoma from the Departments of Dermatology, Pathology, and Surgery, Tulane University, New Orleans, and the Charity Hospital of Louisiana, New Orleans. The clinicopathologic concept of acral lentiginous melanoma was first introduced by Reed¹ in 1976. It was extended by Arrington et al,² who reported 33 cases of plantar melanoma, 27 of which were acral lentiginous melanoma that had been treated at the Charity Hospital of Louisiana between 1948 and 1968.
