The decision to drop the acknowledgment of secretarial help from ARCHIVES manuscripts was made several months before Dr Aronberg's letter was received. Because of the manuscript backlog and processing time required for publication, these deletions may not yet have been made at the time that his letter appeared. I did not publish Dr Aronberg's letter to support our decision, as claimed. I published it because, like the letter by Ms Mindel and Ms Greenwald, it was an interesting one, and deserved to be in print.

The decision to eliminate the acknowledgment of secretarial help from ARCHIVES manuscripts was made on a simple and direct basis—we decided to limit acknowledgments to only those persons who contributed to the scientific aspects and presentation of the material contained in the manuscript.
