To the Editor.—
We read with interest the article by Cohen and Samorodin in the November 1982 ARCHIVES (118:953-954) describing two siblings with familial erythromelalgia. The authors administered aspirin, naproxen and dipyridamole, and nitroglycerine ointment. This treatment failed to affect the patients' skin changes and symptoms. We want to record a successful treatment of erythromelalgia with sodium nitroprusside in our hospital.1 Sodium nitroprusside has also been used in the treatment of ergotism, a peripheral vascular disease.2
Measuring the BP of the patients is useful. Hypertension may be an associated finding of erythromelalgia, and sodium nitroprusside is also an effective drug for treating hypertension in these patients.1
