The communications received on my book review have been astounding; they have attracted more attention than the book. In response to Dr Blank, that was not vitriol that oozed from my pen, but academic tears that salinated the article in genuine sorrow over an academic job poorly done. Scholarship is not stringing together a MEDLARS search of the literature in book form (a determined resident could do that). It is not a perfunctory, student-level description of anatomy and physiology, nor is it a bare-bones catalogue of scalp disorders. And certainly it is not a bland collection of uninformative pictures. This "encyclopedic compendium" would not pass as scholarship at Berkeley or Cambridge, Mass, nor here on Mt Parnassus, and I doubt if it would draw a crowd on Broadway (New York and/or San Francisco).
