To the Editor.—

Thank you for the editorial entitled "Herpes Simplex Infection" by Jarratt published in the February ARCHIVES (1983;119:99-103). Having just delivered a speech on the subject for a local hospital, I know how difficult it is to prepare something on such a rapidly developing topic. However, I wish to bring your attention to two points.

Vontver et al¹ believe pregnant women at term with recurrent active herpes simplex infection of the vulva should have a cesarean section regardless of how the long membranes were ruptured, because there was less viral shedding found from the cervix in the recurrent attack. Therefore, there would be less chance of an ascending infection in the fetus.
