In the August ARCHIVES, Tanaka et al¹ reported a case of bullous pemphigoid (BP) associated with a transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) of the bladder; the patient's serum contained antibody reactive with the basement membrane zone (BMZ) of the skin and the TCC as detected with the complement immunofluorescence (IF) microscopy technique. The authors stated that, to their knowledge, this was the first such case reported in the English literature.

I and my colleagues have reported previously a similar case² of antigenic similarities between colonic cancer and skin BMZ; this case was even more important because it was the patient's own colonic tumor that was positive with the standard IF technique. . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
