To the Editor.—

Because of a presentation by Kubota and Hori¹ at the Tokyo International Congress in 1982, we² had the opportunity to discuss the case of pigmentatio reticularis faciei et colli with multiple epithelial cysts that they subsequently published in the January ARCHIVES.³ We wish to comment on this case further because of its important position in the broad spectrum of Dowling-Degos disease (DDD).

The reticulate pigmentation on the face and neck of this patient closely resembles that of DDD. The presence of multiple epithelial cysts is not unusual in DDD: all six of Brown's⁴ patients and case 5 of Wilson-Jones and Grice⁵ had "epidermoid cysts." Also, the microscopic picture of Hori and Kubota's patient is quite similar to DDD or to Kitamura's acropigmentation (KAR) that may be associated with DDD.
