To the Editor.—

I am disappointed with the review of the fourth edition of Pinkus' Guide to Dermatohistopathology by Dr K. J. Friedman in the May issue of the ARCHIVES.

Dr Friedman stated that common antigens (eg, S100 protein and carcinoembryonic antigen) were not discussed in the chapter by Dr Soltani. Chapter 4 by Dr Soltani covers immunostaining applied to differential diagnosis of vesiculobullous dermatoses, vasculitides, and disorders of the connective tissue where these two antigens are not useful. Dr Friedman should have noted references to S100 protein and carcinoembryonic antigen on pages 307, 528, and 574 in chapters related to Langerhans' cells, Paget's disease, and granular cell myoblastoma.

Inclusion of various entities into a chapter is for the convenience of differential diagnosis and is not an indication of histogenetic relation.
