REPORT OF A CASE

An 8-month-old girl was referred to the dermatology clinic at Stanford (Calif) Medical Center for evaluation of an erythematous papulosquamous nonpruritic eruption on the face, axilla, neck, trunk, extremities, and groin. She had been adopted after a normal pregnancy and delivery. The biological parents have a history of atopy. No skin lesions were noted at birth, but the eruption had been present since 2 months of age. She was otherwise healthy.

Physical examination revealed numerous erythematous, sharply demarcated scaly patches and thin plaques with erythematous borders involving the face in a butterfly pattern and cheek and neck (Fig 1). The scalp showed slight scaling, and the upper anterior aspect of the chest was almost completely spared except for a few islands of small plaques and papules (Fig 2). A punch biopsy specimen was obtained from one of the lesions (Figs 3 and 4).
