To the Editor.—
We have read with great interest the histologic findings of Jerdan and coworkers1 in their recent study of the subsets of lupus erythematosus.
Our experience with the wide range of clinical presentations of lupus erythematosus led us to explore the possibility that histologic clues may have predictive or prognostic value.
Utilizing the histologic criteria proposed by Bangert et al,2Jerdan et al were unable to reproduce any marked histologie difference between the different clinical subsets, and our preliminary studies appear to confirm this. However, we note that some of our findings in chronic discoid lupus erythematosus differ quite markedly from those of Jerdan et al (Table). We have compared the figures for those criteria found to be most significant by Jerdan et al.
Our study continues and may cast further light on this potentially serious disorder.
