Parity, Polypregnancy, Paternity, and PUPPP

To the Editor.—

Correspondence in the ARCHIVES has recently centered on the possible relationship between pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy (PUPPP), maternal-fetal weight gain, and twin pregnancy.1,2 This association has been strengthened by the report of PUPPP in patients with polyhydramnios and triplet pregnancy.3 We have recently reviewed the clinical and histologic features of 32 patients with PUPPP seen at our institution over a 6-year period (1985 through 1991) (F. C. P.; P. Dervan, FRCPath; S. O'Loughlin, FRCPI; unpublished observation, January 1992). The mean age of onset of the eruption in this group of patients was 28 years. In 30 patients (94%), the eruption commenced in the third trimester. There were four twin pregnancies (12%). Twenty-eight patients (87%) were gravida 1, three were gravida 2, and one was gravida 5.
