The Editorial Board of the ARCHIVES wishes to recognize and encourage the publication of research studies performed by dermatology residents and fellows. Tangible evidence of our intent is achieved by the presentation of an annual award to the trainee who, as first author, submits the best research manuscript. Determination of what constitutes the most meritorious research is carried out by an awards committee that is selected annually to review all of the eligible manuscripts. The committee members assess the originality and importance of the work, the effort expended by the trainee, the quality of the data generated, the suitability of the conclusions reached, and the clarity with which the results are presented. The award for manuscripts published in 1991 has been presented to George J. Hruza, MD, for his study regarding the effect of Q-switched laser irradiation on the skin.1
