Severe Phototoxic Burn Following Celery Ingestion-Reply

In Reply.—

Drs Dijkstra and Chang have noted a calculation error in the report in the October 1990 issue of the ARCHIVES.1 I can only confirm that the amount of methoxsalen (8-methoxypsoralen)—equivalent psoralens in the extract would correspond to a total dose of about 22.5 mg in the particular piece of celery root analyzed.

Since the purpose of the evaluation was to demonstrate that clinically relevant psoralen amounts may be ingested under special circumstances, I believe that the conclusions of the report still hold true.

In addition, it is important to remember that the celery root we analyzed was obtained from the market 1 week after the patient bought the photosensitizing piece, and the results can only give indirect evidence of the psoralen levels of the actual piece of celery.
