I SUSPECT that many readers, when they see that the subject of this special issue of the ARCHIVES is genetics, will want to throw it away or, at the least, ignore it as long as possible and then put it away, unread, on a shelf. This is because the arcane subject of molecular biologic study of the skin seems very disconnected from the daily clinical practice of dermatology, which is, after all, the vocation of most of our readers. However, I would argue against ignoring this issue on the basis that molecular biology will certainly have a huge impact on the practice of dermatology and understanding of dermatologic disease. Therefore, in this editorial, I will outline several general reasons why it might be valuable to learn about genetics and skin, and I will illustrate these reasons with examples from this issue.
