Dr Lessin raises the question of the timing of the National Resident Matching Program for dermatology, a question that has been asked many times in the past. His impression that the Matching Program has been implemented and timed partly as a "recruitment tool," however, is erroneous, as that was never a consideration. Rather, for medical students, the critical choice of a field of specialization and a specific training program require the provision of adequate time for decision, mature judgment, sufficient medical experience, and freedom from excessive and unreasonable pressures. The relatively late date set for the Match was actually a continuation of the date employed previously by program directors, a date that had been used for at least 30 to 40 years prior to initiation of the Matching Program in 1981.
