We thank Drs Williams and Pembroke for their comments. We agree that despite minor clinical variations, the cases reported by Marten et al,¹ Williams et al,² Frieden et al,³ and Hansen et a⁴ are all reports of the same condition. Moreover, Gianotti et al⁵ reported the virtually identical condition in the French-language literature in 1970. Selecting a clinically useful and appropriate name for this condition, however, seems to us to be a more difficult issue. The authors have pointed out the limitations of the designation in the title of the article by Marten et al, ''An Unusual Papular and Acneiform Facial Eruption in the Negro Child.'' Although this condition appears to be much more common in blacks, the acronym ''FACE—facial Afro-Caribbean childhood eruption,'' in our opinion, does not take into account the occasional presence of this condition in other races or the occurrence of the . . .
