Dr Crawshaw's¹ provocatively titled article (''Are Dermatologists Greedy?'') reminds me of the question: ''How often do you beat your wife?'' It's difficult to answer without sounding defensive.

Since Dr Crawshaw is not a dermatologist or a member of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), I am not surprised that he would be unaware of the fact that there is a formalized process available to deal with unethical or illegal actions by our members. On the other hand, it is somewhat disconcerting that his commentary contains so many unsubstantiated comments. I believe that my involvement on the AAD Ethics Committee and my participation in coding programs permit me some insight into the questions raised by Dr Crawshaw.
