Dr Crawshaw's1 provocatively titled article (''Are Dermatologists Greedy?'') reminds me of the question: ''How often do you beat your wife?'' It's difficult to answer without sounding defensive.
Since Dr Crawshaw is not a dermatologist or a member of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), I am not surprised that he would be unaware of the fact that there is a formalized process available to deal with unethical or illegal actions by our members. On the other hand, it is somewhat disconcerting that his commentary contains so many unsubstantiated comments. I believe that my involvement on the AAD Ethics Committee and my participation in coding programs permit me some insight into the questions raised by Dr Crawshaw.
Members of the AAD Ethics Committee have participated in many discussions regarding dermatologist's fees. The issue is fraught with dilemmas. Any attempt to set a hypothetically ideal fee is contrary to the federally
