REPORT OF A CASE
A healthy 16-month-old girl was seen for evaluation of generalized pruritus of 2 weeks' duration.
Her medical history was irrelevant except for two episodes of urinary infections at 2 and 8 months. No familial history of atopy, intestinal parasites, or pruritus was recorded.
Physical examination disclosed multiple linear scratches on the trunk, buttocks, and extremities (Figure 1). Several grouped erythematous papules (di- ameter, 1 to 2 mm) on the right antecubital fossa were observed (Figure 2). No enlarged lymph nodes or hepatosplenomegaly were found.
A complete blood cell count, standard biochemical studies, IgE levels, and chest roentgenogram were normal. Graham's test and fecal examination failed to show parasites. Scrapings from skin lesions did not demonstrate mites. Isolated small glassy spicules were observed after microscopic examination of a cellophane-tape sample taken from the right antecubital flexure.
