REPORT OF A CASE

A 6-month-old healthy boy was referred to our outpatient clinic because of hair loss. At birth, the baby's hair looked normal, but during the first month of life there was progressive, massive hair shedding. It was reported that two members of the father's family had the same abnormality since infancy.

On examination, the baby's scalp looked as if it had been shaved. The hair was short, less than 2 cm in length, with small keratotic papules (Figure 1). The condition was most severe on the nape of the neck. The eyebrows and eyelashes were not affected, and the findings of the rest of the physical examination were unremarkable. The light microscopic appearance of the hair shaft is shown in Figure 2 and Figure 3.
