Kaposi sarcoma—associated herpeslike virus, or human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) has been found in classic, endemic African, and Kaposi sarcomas (KSs) related to the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).^1-3 The virus has also been found in non-KS tumors of immunocompromised patients, including body cavity lymphomas in patients with AIDS,⁴ a primary cerebral B-cell lymphoma in a patient uninfected with the human immunodeficiency virus given long-term steroid therapy,⁵ and various benign and malignant epithelial skin tumors of transplant recipients undergoing immunosuppressive therapy.⁶ Oral psoralen plus UV-A (PUVA) photochemotherapy, which is widely used to treat psoriasis, is also known to cause cutaneous malignancies (mainly squamous cell carcinomas)⁷ and to be associated with immune system suppression.⁸ To determine if HHV-8 is also associated with PUVA-induced (ie, iatrogenic) immune system suppression and tumorigenesis in patients with skin disease, we looked for HHV-8 in premalignant and malignant skin lesions of patients . . .
