Blue Nodules in a Newborn

REPORT OF A CASE

A white male neonate, the product of a term gestation, was born by spontaneous vaginal delivery to a 21-year-old primigravida. The delivery was complicated by thick meconium and mild respiratory distress, which resolved with suctioning.

On examination in the newborn nursery, a 7x7-cm firm abdominal mass was noted that extended from the lower abdomen to the left upper quadrant of the abdomen. In addition, several 4-mm firm, blanching, bluish cutaneous nodules were seen on the posterior area of the right thigh, the right upper lip, the right cheek, the lateral aspect of the right side of the neck, and the anterior aspect of the chest (Figure 1). There was no lymphadenopathy or hepatosplenomegaly, and the findings of the rest of the examination were normal.
