For many years it has been believed that eczema may be associated with a disturbed carbohydrate metabolism. For example, it has been noted that in some patients who have both eczema and diminished tolerance for sugar, the former condition improved or disappeared entirely following the institution of low carbohydrate diets. More recently, numerous investigations as to the alleged association of the two conditions, particularly by biochemical methods, appear to have resulted in a demonstration of a causal relationship.

An attempt has been made to investigate further the alleged causal relationship between eczema and lowered sugar tolerance. The method of approach was as follows: (a) a comparative study of the carbohydrate metabolism of eczematous and of noneczematous persons; (b) determination of the effects of intradermal injections of dextrose and (c) the effects of direct contact of solutions of dextrose with the skin; (d) a study of skin sensitivity to chemical irritants . . .
