In 1874, Sir James Paget¹ described certain chronic diseases of the skin of the nipple and areola which were succeeded by the formation of scirrhous carcinoma in the mammary gland. He had observed fifteen cases, all in women, from 40 to 60 years or more of age, in whom the disease had begun as an eruption on the nipple and areola. His concise description, which was only a clinical one, holds true today. The lesions were described as beginning like, and having practically all the characteristics of, acute eczema. He had never seen the eruption extend beyond the areola, and only once had he seen it pass into deeper ulceration of the skin after the manner of a rodent ulcer. In some of the cases, the eruption presented the characteristics of ordinary eczema, with minute vesicles, succeeded by soft, moist, yellowish scabs or scales and constant viscid exudation. In . . .
