PITYRIASIS LICHENOIDES ET VARIOLIFORMIS ACUTA (HABERMANN)

Within the past year, we have encountered three cases in which the eruptive manifestations corresponded exactly to the disease described in the Continental and British literature under the title "Pityriasis Lichenoides et Varioliformis Acuta."

This apparently unusual condition is characterized by a papular eruption which resembles both papular syphilis and pityriasis lichenoides chronica. The clinical and histologic aspects of the disease would lead one to diagnose it as pityriasis lichenoides chronica, except for the acute course and the inflammatory aspects of some of the lesions.

The disease was given its name by Habermann,1 but was originally described by Mucha2 in 1916. Since that date, however, cases have been described by Rusch,3 Oppenheim,4 Krüger,5 Habermann,1 Almkvist,6 Gray,7 MacCormac,8 Haldin-Davis,9 Roxburgh,10 Sibley,11 Dowling12 and Wigley.13
