(A VARIETY OF PARAPSORIASIS)

Until recent years chronicity has been considered one of the chief characteristics of parapsoriasis. The name pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta may therefore sound paradoxic, especially as it also includes a morphologic feature not commonly associated with parapsoriasis. Although Wise¹ in a recent paper on parapsoriasis discussed the group of acute eruptions and apparently accepted pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta as a variety of this disease, no case of this kind has so far been reported in the American literature; this is a noteworthy fact and should justify a somewhat lengthy discussion of the subject in connection with the present report on three patients evidently belonging in this group.

In order to avoid misunderstanding, it may be mentioned that according to the nomenclature generally accepted and based on Brocq's system, parapsoriasis guttata and pityriasis lichenoides chronica are synonyms, and will be used as such; the other varieties are parapsoriasis . . .
