The clinical and histologic features of granuloma annulare are well defined and leave little for discussion. On the other hand, its cause has been a subject for active discussion for many years. The center of the argument has revolved around the moot question of its tuberculous origin, which was first raised by Brocq and Little in the early years of the present century. Today, opinions about the rôle of tuberculosis in granuloma annulare differ widely. Perhaps the trend toward a belief in the tuberculous origin of the disease has become definite in recent years, but there are still many who regard the question as fairly open.

This article is an attempt to marshal all pertinent evidence on the subject and to present it as succinctly as possible.
