During the past few years we have become more and more interested in a group of cases of what we believe to be a distinctive type of dermatitis. These cases have arrested our attention primarily because certain typical findings and manifestations have occurred with a high degree of regularity and uniformity and because the repeated combination of characteristics seemed significant enough to suggest the possibility of segregating this particular seemingly eczematiform dermatitis from other conditions belonging to the heterogeneous eczema group.

It is by no means our intention to imply that this picture has never before been described or discussed. On the contrary, we believe that it has frequently been mentioned in textbooks, in case reports and in numerous other dermatologic publications.¹
