Report of a Case in California

While the frequency of sporotrichosis in the United States has been said to be next to the incidence in France, the number of reports of cases is comparatively small (about 200), and for the most part these have emanated from the region of the Mississippi and Missouri valleys. Examination of these reports shows that in a considerable number of cases in which the condition was diagnosed as sporotrichosis, the diagnoses were not proved culturally; this would further reduce the number of cases of actual sporotrichosis recorded, as the etiologic fungus is cultivated rather easily as a rule.

The occurrence of sporotrichosis in Los Angeles should be sufficient reason in itself to warrant a report, aside from the fact that the disease occurred in a child aged 6 years. The great majority of cases have been in adults.
