Much has been done in an attempt to determine the morphologic changes of precancerous degeneration. Some structural changes of the epithelial cells have been pointed out as a characteristic sign of this process; e. g., polymorphism, some cells having several nuclei, has been observed, as well as asymmetrical mitoses and circumscribed cell proliferations. Critical examinations, made by several pathologists, of the changes that have been described did not confirm the supposition that they are of specific significance. According to Bloch,1 the precancerous process has no morphologic equivalent. Korényi,2 who in his critical essay examined the significance of each morphologic change observed in these processes, came to the conclusion that the changes hitherto described as characteristic of precancerous degeneration may be present in processes already in the malignant state or in entirely benign conditions.
