SYPHILITIC ASTHMA WITH ATROPHIC CIRRHOSIS IN ACQUIRED SYPHILIS

Syphilitic bronchial asthma is apparently one of the most unusual manifestations of syphilis. A search of the literature showed but two cases, one reported by Sézary and Alibert1 and the other by Joltrain.2 Atrophic cirrhosis, on the other hand, does not seem to be an unusual occurrence in connection with syphilis. The association of syphilitic asthma with atrophic cirrhosis in the same patient has received no consideration in the literature. The importance of this association will be realized when it is recalled that arsenicals may be markedly beneficial to asthma but exceedingly harmful to cirrhosis. Furthermore, it should be emphasized that the asthmatic state possibly may render the liver more susceptible to shock from arsenical administration, as in the case which I shall now describe.
