There is still room for improvement in the treatment of scabies. Many of the specific remedies are too odorous or greasy for comfort; others act too slowly. Some are ineffective in combating the frequently accompanying pyoderma. Their use therefore necessitates a delay until the pyogenic complications are brought under control. One hundred per cent cures are not to be expected with any preparation. When used by susceptible patients, many lead to severe dermatitis venenata, and this may prove more resistant and troublesome than the original "itch."
For these reasons rotenone (C23H22O6) has been investigated as a remedy for scabies. This substance is derived from derris root (Derris elliptica) or from South American cube root (Lonchocarpous nicou). It is said that the natives of the Amazon valley have employed it for many years in the treatment of all types of parasitic dermatoses.
