Now that large armies are being sent to distant parts of the world the knowledge of tropical diseases is becoming of paramount importance. Mal del pinto (pinta or carate) is a disease which is practically unknown to the majority of American physicians. Its importance, nevertheless, is evident, judging by the number of patients affected. The author estimates that probably 1,000,000 cases exist at present in Latin America, of which 270,685 are in Mexico and about 400,000 in Colombia.
Dr. Leon y Blanco is well known because of his original contributions on this subject. He started a new conception of pinta by his studies on its early manifestations and by showing that the late pigmentary changes are not the only ones which occur.
