A program for the treatment of early syphilis adopted by the United States Army consists of a twenty-six week course of combined therapy.1 During the first five weeks two injections of mapharsen (0.06 Gm. each) and one of bismuth subsalicylate (0.2 Gm. each) are given each week. For the next five weeks the injections of bismuth are suspended and mapharsen is given twice weekly. Then the use of mapharsen is discontinued for five weeks, during which time bismuth alone is given. During the final ten weeks, two injections of mapharsen are given each week, and for the last six weeks of this period weekly injections of bismuth subsalicylate are given also. At the end of the twenty-six weeks, therefore, the patient has received forty injections of mapharsen (totaling 2.4 Gm.) and eighteen of bismuth subsalicylate (totaling 3.6 Gm.).
