Dermatitis of the feet due to shoes, although long recognized, has been considered a comparatively rare condition. Niles¹ reported² cases, Lord and Wolfe2 2 cases, Lewis³ 2 cases, Anderson and Ayres⁴ 1 case, Burgess⁵ 5 cases and Beerman⁶ 2 cases. This report is based on observations in 22 cases of the disease encountered in practice in the past three years, which indicates that it is much more frequently seen, at least in Chattanooga, than is ordinarily supposed. In every instance the diagnosis was confirmed by positive reactions to patch tests with the materials from which the shoes were made. New methods and materials employed in the preparation and manufacture of shoes may be in part responsible for the apparent increase in the incidence of this eruption.
