L. P., a white American carpenter aged 62, first noticed swelling and itching of his right leg in March 1942. Soon large patches of red papules and crusts appeared, spreading from the ankle to the hip. Most of these lesions resolved spontaneously, but one raised plaque about the size of a silver dollar persisted on the right shin. This lesion was completely excised at Kings County Hospital and submitted for histologic examination. Soon thereafter a soft raised papule 1.5 cm. in diameter, with a purulent discharge, appeared at the angle between the nose and the inner left canthus of the eye.
