It has been known for some time that more medical officers are needed by the Armed Forces. It was not generally known, however, whether more dermatologists could be utilized. To obtain information on this question, letters were written to the Surgeons General of the Army and Navy, stating that answers would be cited editorially in the ARCHIVES. Satisfactory replies were soon received. Rear Admiral Ross McIntyre, Surgeon General of the Navy, wrote as follows on Jan. 20, 1944: "There are now eight medical officers of the regular Navy and seventy-eight of the Naval Reserve who are qualified in dermatology and syphilology." He added that not all of these had been certified by the American Board of Dermatology and Syphilology. He made the important statement that "there is a need for approximately fifty additional dermatologists and syphilologists in the Medical Corps of the Navy."
