FURUNCULAR MYIASIS

The name furuncular myiasis was given by Brumpt1 to a form of myiasis in which the cutaneous tumor is the first and last morbid manifestation caused by parasitic larvae. In Europe this myiasis is caused generally by Hypoderma diana and rarely by Hypoderma bovis. In the United States the causal agent is, according to the Suttons,2 Hypoderma bovis and rarely the larva of Dermatobia. In South America, however, furuncular myiasis is due to Dermatobia cyaniventris. The adult of Dermatobia cyaniventris (Dermatobia noxialis or hominis) is a gray or bluish, almost glabrous fly, with a yellow face, shining abdomen and pale brown wings; it is from 14 to 17 mm. long. The larvae of Dermatobia cyaniventris are popularly known in Brazil as Berne, torcel or Oura.
