To the Editor:—I read with interest the article on "Clinical Manifestations of Vitamin Deficiencies as Observed in the Federated Malay States" by Dr. Paul Fasal (ARCH. DERMAT. & SYPH. 50:160 [Sept.] 1944). The clinical features and histopathologic changes correspond with those described in my report of an investigation in China (Reiss F.: A Contribution to Cutaneous Manifestations of Vitamin-A Deficiency, Chinese M. J. 50:945 [July] 1936). In addition to the prelèche-like lesions described, I also noticed, not infrequently, transverse furrows of the nail plates. In contrast to the lesions of Dr. Fasal's patients, the perlèche-like lesions of all our patients disappeared under cod liver oil therapy simultaneously with the disappearance of the cutaneous manifestations. It appears to me, therefore, that the cutaneous manifestations are an indication of a deficiency or a lack of vitamin-A primarily rather than of a deficiency of the vitamin B . . .
