IN 1926 one of us, with Usher,¹ made the first formal report on a group of cases, the first examples of which had been demonstrated by Ormsby and Mitchell before the Chicago Dermatological Society in 1921. The paper was entitled "An Unusual Type of Pemphigus, Combining Features of Lupus Erythematosus" and described 11 cases, 5 of which had been observed by one or both of the writers.¹ It was then stated that the peculiar clinical features of the dermatosis made it difficult to determine beyond dispute its proper place among cutaneous disorders. It was suggested, however, that there were two possibilities that must be considered—either that manifestations resembling lupus erythematosus can occur as an atypical feature of pemphigus or that we were dealing in this instance with a syndrome in which pemphigus occurs in combination with lupus erythematosus, a common etiologic factor being responsible for the development . . .
