The patient is a white woman who has been under treatment at intervals for nearly ten years because of a fungous infection of the feet with involvement of the nails due to Trichophyton purpureum. The condition has been kept under partial control by various fungicides and by the grinding away of the diseased toe nails.

Three and a half weeks ago, after a manicure, changes consisting of brownish spots and specks beneath the nail were noted in one finger nail.
