Five EXAMPLES of a peculiar cutaneous or subcutaneous tumor have been encountered during the past year which have been described in the literature as "calcifying" or "calcified" epithelioma When the first of these tumors was seen, a diagnosis of carcinoma arising in an epidermal cyst was considered; Dr. W. Harold Civin, of the Queen's Hospital, Honolulu, T. H., suggested the correct diagnosis. A review of the surgical material at the Straub Clinic from 1945 through 1950 (during which time approximately 9,000 specimens were examined) revealed eight additional cases which had been reported under a variety of names (Table 1). These 13 cases are being presented because the tumor is unusual and little known, and because it may be misdiagnosed as carcinoma. There are, moreover, certain clinical and pathologic features of considerable interest about which there is some controversy.
